Service on the Cutting Edge

Apio was ahead of its time in 1996 when it developed and launched the Eat Smart brand. Eat Smart, created as a way to promote a health centered message to the end consumer, first appeared in the production of three pound vegetable mixes mostly intended for open display – or bulk bin – merchandising in grocery stores. Soon after the success of the open display programs, Eat Smart moved into smaller, pre-packaged formats, setting the standard in the industry for the use of 12-oz packaging.

During this same year, Apio and Landec Corporation, collaborated to market fresh cut produce using Landec’s proprietary BreatheWay® specialty packaging technology to extend freshness naturally. In 1999, Apio was acquired by Landec, and through this acquisition, Apio and the Eat Smart brand a wholly owned subsidiary of Landec.

Eat Smart fresh cut vegetables are available in a variety of package sizes and product configurations including our popular patented “flip and serve” party tray for club, retail and food service segments in the US, Mexico and Canada.
