Answers
Should I wash my vegetables at home?
We wash and prepare Eat Smart products using strict food safety guidelines before packaging. It is not necessary to wash our veggies again at home. It is important to note however to always use safe handling procedures for raw vegetables. Always wash thoroughly and keep separate from meat and poultry before cooking (including cutting boards, utensils and handling.)
Do you sell the dip or dressing separately?
We purchase our dips and dressings from various suppliers who specialize in the production of those products. In some cases those suppliers sell it at retail and in some cases, they do not. For information on specific products, please call our consumer hotline or email us through this website.
Can I freeze my vegetables?
Eat Smart fresh-cut vegetables can be frozen if they are blanched or lightly steamed before freezing. Once frozen, the vegetables should be used within a month. However, for maximum freshness we recommend eating them fresh by the "best if used by" date on the package.
How long will my fresh cut vegetables stay fresh?
Eat Smart fresh-cut vegetables are processed soon after the vegetables are harvested in our growers' fields. The package has a "best if used by" date to inform you of the time period for optimum freshness of the vegetables. Use your Eat Smart vegetables before the indicated "best if used by" date on the package.
How should store my opened bag of fresh cut vegetables?
Opened packages should be twisted shut and resealed with a twist tie to keep fresh. It is best to store them in the crisper of your refrigerator.
Should I take my vegetables out of the original package to store in a plastic bag?
No. Your Eat Smart fresh-cut vegetables are packed in a specialty package that is designed to preserve their freshness. If you remove them from the original package, you risk early spoilage and they may not last as long.
What is the Breatheway® patch for?
The specialty package provides a natural gateway for airflow that maintains produce quality. Learn more here.
Do your products contain added preservatives?
Eat Smart vegetables are preserved naturally, using BreatheWay® technology, and therefore do not contain artificial preservatives. Other components in our products, such as dressings or toppings may contain preservatives. Please see the Eat Smart page for specific items.
Where do your products come from?
The majority of our vegetables are grown in California and sometimes come from other states depending on the season and vegetable. Occasionally some products are sourced from Central America as well. Regardless of where our vegetables come from, we require the same standards for growing and harvesting practices from all of our growers in order to guarantee you a quality product every time. On bagged products, the country of origin can be found on the BreatheWay patch in black ink. On tray products, it is printed on the top, either a domed lid or flexible film, in black ink, near the "Best if Used by" date.
Are your products gluten free?
A majority of Eat Smart products are gluten-free. Any products containing gluten have the source listed in the ingredient statement. For example, in the Asian Affair Fresh Salad, the Chow Mein Noodles list "wheat flour," a known source of gluten, as an ingredient.
Are your items kosher?
The following items of ours are certified Kosher and indicated as such with KSA printed near the "Best if Used by" date on the top right corner of the bags: Broccoli Slaw, Confetti Slaw, Sugar Snap Peas, Snow Peas, and Sunrise Slaw. All Eat Smart vegetables are prepared through a similar process, however, costs associated with certification prevent us from certifying the remainder of our product line as Kosher.
What is a serving?
One vegetable serving is 3/4 cup (6 oz.) of 100% vegetable juice, 1/2 cup cooked or canned vegetables, or 1 cup of raw leafy vegetables.
